Disappointing. Not the old Rocky mountain house that we used to go to. There is no longer fresh buns and coleslaw for the table. Schnitzel were good. Sides were lacking. Very limited gluten free items. Meals were very simple with no garnish. For instance, smoked meat sandwich only has smoked meat on rye, no pickle, no cheese. Not worth the prices for the food.
Brittany was an AMAZING server for lunch today! Food came out pretty quick and was very good! Portions are a good size, and the mixed drink I ordered, although not totally pretty tasted FANTASTIC! we will definitely be back next time we pass through arnprior!
We were looking for a place to celebrate a belated Valentine's Day, and Rocky Mountain House was one of the only restaurants in Arnprior that we hadn't yet tried after moving here a year and a half ago. We read the reviews, but decided we needed to judge for ourselves. We knew that if we didn't go at least once, we'd always wonder if the reviews were fair. Well, we have to say that yes, the real reviews (not the 5-star ones) are fair. The service was decent, the atmosphere was fine (for a cold Sunday night in February), but the food was less than mediocre. The food started out with some tasty fried cheese curds, which were the best part of the whole meal. My wife ordered a Shirley Temple, which can't really fail. The few cocktails on the menu are all sweet, and I don't really do sweet cocktails, so I asked for a whiskey sour. They didn't have bitters. What sort of a bar doesn't have bitters? I'm not entirely convinced that there was any whiskey in it either, as it pretty much tasted just like that lime soda you get at an Italian restaurant. My wife ordered the schnitzel that is half mushroom gravy and half tomato sauce, while I ordered the bison burger. We overheard the table next to us asking about spaetzle, which isn't on the menu. With fond memories of the cheesy spaetzle we used to enjoy at the Bierhaus in Kanata (RIP), my wife asked for it instead of mashed potatoes. The waitresses and kitchen weren't really sure if there was any, but eventually they decided that there was and they brought her a little bowl as well as the mashed potatoes. We'll start with my wife's meal. The portions are generous. The schnitzel is nice and thin and has a decent breading. The gravy and tomato sauce were okay. The mashed potatoes and vegetables were awful and the spaetzle was worse. I'm not usually one to guess at a restaurant's method of cooking, but I'd say that the potatoes were either the instant kind or they were very overcooked. They tasted like nothing. No salt. No cream. Nothing. The same for the vegetables, which I would guess were reheated from frozen. The cauliflower was tasteless grainy mush. The carrots were okay, but only by the virtue of carrots having some natural sweetness. The spaetzle had no redeeming qualities. Tasteless blobs floating in a pool of unsalted butter. My fries were okay. Nothing special, but they were the best part of my plate. The bison patty was dried out. I'm guessing that it had either been sitting under a heat lamp for a while, or had been cooked previously and reheated. The whole burger was dry. Dry bun, dry patty, dry mushrooms, rubber tomato, dry fried onions. I had to cover it in ketchup to lubricate it enough to get down my throat. We didn't ask to see the dessert menu, but went to Timmies instead for a blueberry fritter and hot chocolate. Thanks Timmies for saving our Valentine's Day Date!
Our server was beyond lovely! We are new to town and were checking out the vendor market going on out front and saw this cute place and wanted to check it out. Benches were a bit wobbly and Creaky. Service was so fast and again 5 stars for service. We ordered eggs Benny which was good but sadly neither of the plates had runny eggs inside/ over cooked. Overall was good, that was the only downside! We will definitely be checking it out again, great for Sunday brunch :)
Had dinner there with another couple. The service was good, the food(we all had different schnitzels) was alright but like other comments, no buns served with the meal. Alcohol is very expensive, $27 for a pitcher of beer is a bit over the top when you consider another $3 plus in taxes, maybe OK for the craft beers, but not for the domestic beers like Coors or Keith's. It wasn't a bad experience but certainly not one good enough that I would recommend it to friends. Maybe we'll go back again but maybe not.
